A Tool to improve Mental Health

Mental illness is the biggest public health problem for children and young people during their upbringing.

We are born with the ability to look at faces and mirror other people’s reactions, and with all the screen time, those conversations become less and less. These abilities have to be taught, you have to train yourself in it.

My concept is about children being able to identify, understand and practice formulating what children feel and think, this to feel better and strengthen yourself.

Many people believe that it is our feelings and thoughts that make us feel bad. It is not our emotions that are the cause of our mental suffering, but rather a lack of emotional awareness.

Increasing awareness of your own and others’ emotions has the following benefits:

  • You can communicate your feelings more clearly to others.
  • You can get through difficulties faster by using your emotions as a compass.
  • You can set personal boundaries that work for you.
  • You can understand others better and be more helpful.
  • You can help yourself to feel better by knowing which decisions lead to you feeling good.

My figures “Jullarna” and their concept are about how you can strengthen your self-esteem and counteract mental illness. In practice the concept of Jullarna wants children to become more aware of their own ability to learn how to handle big thoughts and feelings.

Some of the positive effects it can have:

  • You feel better
  • Strengthens self-esteem
  • Increases collaboration
  • Opens up communication
  • Reduces bullying
  • Increases empathy and understanding for others
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Less susceptible to drug and alcohol abuse
  • Less susceptible to psychological distress
  • Less susceptible to depression

In a press release from the Government Office, it is stated that they will invest SEK 1.5 billion in the area of mental health for children and young people.
